How to make a Roblox thumbnail that gets clicked: data from 905 games

Updated 6 November 2026 · By ClipClip

The short answer

Show one character reacting to your game's main action, as a bright, colorful scene, with no words or one to three at the top. Make two to five of them, genuinely different, and let Roblox test them. On 6 November 2026, of the 905 thumbnails of the games on Roblox's charts, 57% had no words besides the logo and 72% showed a character, and 88% of the games kept two or more. Judge yours by plays, not clicks: that's what Home ranks.

What 905 chart thumbnails show

57%no words besides the game's logo
72%show a character or a creature
66%are polished 3D scenes, not screenshots
88%of the games keep 2 or more thumbnails

On 6 November 2026 we read every chart Roblox lists (26 of them, all countries and devices): 913 games. For each, Roblox's public data gave its page's thumbnails, and we measured the first one, the picture its page leads with. Code measured its light and color; an AI model read what it shows, and we checked 40 of its readings by eye (below). These are the games that are winning, not their click rates: Roblox doesn't publish those.

The recipe, rule by rule

  1. Show what players do, not your logo. The old giants lead with their logo: it's on 53% of 2020–2024's 40 biggest games' thumbnails. The new hits show the game instead: the logo is on 23% of 2026's 40 biggest new games and 19% of Up-and-Coming's 99. If someone can't guess what they'd do in your game from the tile alone, it fails.
  2. Few words, at the top. 57% carry no words besides the logo, 29% one to three, and only 14% four or more. Words sit in the bottom strip, where Roblox's player count can cover them, on 48% of the most visited games but 15% of 2026's new hits.
  3. A character with one clear emotion. 72% show a character or a creature, and 46% a face with an expression (shock, joy, anger, a smug grin): 60% among Up-and-Coming games. Close-ups are rare, 7%: the face reacts to something in the scene.
  4. Make the player the bacon or the noob. Roblox's default looks stand for "you" on 25% of all chart thumbnails and 34% of Up-and-Coming's, against 14% of the 50 most visited, which have mascots of their own.
  5. A polished 3D scene from your real game. 66% are posed 3D renders, 83% of 2026's new hits; plain gameplay screenshots are 17%, and 8% of Up-and-Coming's. Polish the scene, but keep every character, item and place one that's really in the game: Roblox ranks mismatched pictures lower.
  6. Bright and colorful, unless your genre is dark. The median thumbnail sits at 48% brightness, and 75% are "quite colorful" or more on the standard colorfulness scale. Blue and orange are the main color of 60%. The genre sets the light: Survival games' thumbnails have a median brightness of 27%, Obby & Platformer's 57%.
  7. Keep several, and refresh them. 88% of the chart games keep 2 or more thumbnails, 50% keep 5 or more. The 50 most visited dress for events: 28% still showed Halloween art on 6 November 2026.

New hits against the giants

Today's biggest games were made years ago, when their name already sold them. The games breaking through now look different, and they are the ones to copy:

Most visited means the most visits ever, so it's mostly older games; Up-and-Coming is Roblox's own chart of rising games (99 that day). The page video, which plays first on the game's page: how to add one.

The busiest games against the quietest

The same day, we split the chart games by how many people were playing: the busiest quarter (226 games) had a median of 14,007 players online, the quietest 73.

It's a pattern, not proof: busy games can pay for better art, and a thumbnail is one reason among many. But the busiest games show a face reacting far more often, and write less.

The marks players already read

36% of the chart thumbnails add a drawn mark: a glowing prize (17%), an arrow (9%), a first-person view with the player's own hands (8%, 15% of Up-and-Coming). From our study of 168 hits, what each one tells players:

CTR: what Roblox measures, and the numbers that exist

Roblox publishes no click-through rate per game and no benchmark for one. Home doesn't rank clicks: since 15 June 2026, its Recommended For You ranks games on play-through rate (people who play after seeing the tile) and first-play bounce (players who leave within the first minutes), among other signals. The numbers that do exist, each with its source:

+8.5% (up to +50%)Qualified play-through rate for games testing several thumbnails, in Roblox's experimentRoblox, October 2024

About 0.1% to 2%Qualified play-through rates developers posted from Creator Analytics, before June 2026DevForum, 2025–2026

Clicks aren't plays. One developer ran two thumbnails in the same ad for a new game (Inside The Factory, 27 July 2026). The game's icon got a 2.59% CTR and 852 clicks, but 2 plays; custom art showing the factory's workers got 2.7% and 466 clicks, and 37 plays. Nearly the same CTR, eighteen times the plays: the picture that shows the real game wins.

Test it on Home and in ads

  • On Home: make 2 to 5 thumbnails active and Roblox's thumbnail personalization shows each group of players the one that works best for them. Make them genuinely different (another character, place or motivation, not another color), keep your current winner among them, and wait 7 days or your next update between rounds.
  • In ads: a campaign takes up to 10 thumbnails and reports each one's impressions, clicks and plays: a fast read for a new game. What it costs: how much Roblox ads cost.
  • Against your benchmark: from 100 daily users, Creator Analytics compares your play-through rate with similar games: where to find it.

What Roblox asks

  • 16:9, ideally 1920×1080 pixels, as .jpg, .png, .gif, .tga or .bmp; under 3 MB for the ones you test on Home. Roblox stretches any other shape to 16:9. Every size: our thumbnail size guide.
  • At least one custom thumbnail: since 19 October 2026, a game with only Roblox's default one gets no Home recommendations.
  • Keep essential text and objects away from the bottom, where the player count can cover them.
  • Show what players will really find, in imagery of your own: mismatched or copied pictures are recommended less.
  • Every upload is moderated against Roblox's Community Rules and Terms of Use before it shows.

How we measured, and what it can't show

  • The games: every game on every chart Roblox listed on 6 November 2026 (913 games, 26 charts, all countries and devices), from Roblox's public data. Each game's first thumbnail, the one its page leads with, at 768×432: 905 read. With personalization, Home may show some players another one.
  • The reading: code measured the light and color of every picture. An AI model (Claude Haiku) read what each one shows. We checked 40 readings picked at random against the pictures: the logo was right in 40, the words in 39, whether anyone is in it in 38, the bacon in 39, the noob in 39. Its noob misses were tiny figures, so the noob's share is a floor.
  • What it can't show: a chart lists the games that are winning, not the thumbnails that win clicks, and Roblox shares no one's click rates. These are the patterns of today's winners, not proof of what causes a click. Your own test on Home settles it for your game.

ClipClip's thumbnail maker

We make ClipClip, so weigh this part accordingly. We built these rules into its thumbnail maker: it watches your recorded gameplay, finds your game's real characters, prizes and places, and plans 1 to 3 thumbnails, each a different idea so Roblox's test has something to pick from, with the bacon or the noob as the player and the words written by code, so they're always spelled right. These three are what it made for a friend's steal game, from one recording:

A steal game: the bacon running off with a black egg as the whale guardian wakes, under the word RUN!!A steal game: the noob grabbing a glowing egg from the winged cosmic bossA steal game: the bacon's panicked face, hugging an egg, a T-Rex charging behind
The heist, the twist made visible, and the player's reaction: three formulas from our study of 168 hits, for one game.

Questions

What is a good CTR for a Roblox thumbnail?

Roblox publishes no per-game CTR and no benchmark for it, and clicks aren't what Home ranks: since June 2026 it ranks games on play-through rate, the share of people who play after seeing your tile. Developers who posted their own ad dashboards in 2026 saw CTRs of about 1% to 3%. From 100 daily users, Creator Analytics compares your play-through rate with similar games: aim for that benchmark.

Should a Roblox thumbnail have text?

Little or none. On 6 November 2026, 57% of the 905 chart thumbnails we read had no words besides the game's logo, and those with words had a median of 2. Put them near the top: Roblox's player count can cover the bottom.

Should I put my game's logo on the thumbnail?

It's what the old giants do, not the new hits: the logo is on 53% of 2020–2024's 40 biggest games' thumbnails, but on 23% of 2026's 40 biggest new games and 19% of Up-and-Coming's. Nobody knows a new game's name yet; show what players do instead.

How many thumbnails should a Roblox game have?

At least 2, so Roblox can test them; up to 5 can be active on Home. 88% of the games on the charts keep 2 or more thumbnails and 50% keep 5 or more; the 50 most visited keep a median of 7.5.

Do clickbait thumbnails still work on Roblox?

No. A player who clicks and leaves within the first minutes counts against your game on Home, Roblox doesn't recommend games whose pictures don't match the game, and its staff warn that clickbait can bring low-quality warnings.
